So, You Just Bought Artwork? How to Care for It So It Lasts Forever

You fell in love with a piece of art, brought it home, and now you’re wondering… how do I take care of it? Whether it’s an original painting, a fine art print, or a delicate painted paper butterfly sculpture, artwork needs a little extra love to stay beautiful for years to come.

Here’s a guide to help you protect your new treasure.

1. Keep It Out of Direct Sunlight

Did you know that UV rays can fade colors over time, especially in watercolors, prints, and paper-based artwork? Try to hang your piece in a spot that doesn’t get direct sun. Indirect light is fine and even better if you’ve got UV-filtering glass or acrylic in the frame.

2. Watch the Humidity

Art doesn’t love damp spaces. High humidity can cause warping, mold, or paper to ripple, while super dry air might lead to cracking in paint or canvas. Ideally, keep your artwork in a room with stable, moderate humidity. Somewhere around 40 to 60 percent is ideal. Avoid hanging pieces in bathrooms or next to heaters.

3. Frame It Well

If your piece came unframed, framing it protects it from dust, pollutants, and physical damage. Use acid-free materials and, if it's on paper, consider adding a mat to prevent the artwork from touching the glass. For sculptures or delicate items, shadowboxes are a great option.

4. Dust Gently and Occasionally

Just like anything else at home, artwork will collect dust. Use a soft, dry microfiber cloth or a clean, soft paintbrush to gently dust frames and surfaces. Never spray cleaner directly on the art or the glass.

5. Handle With Clean Hands

When moving or rehanging your art, wash your hands first or use clean cotton gloves if you have them. Oils from our skin can leave permanent marks, especially on paper and unvarnished paint.

6. Store It Safely If Needed

If you ever need to store your artwork, wrap it in acid-free tissue or glassine paper and place it in a sturdy, climate-controlled space. Avoid attics, basements, or garages where temperature and humidity fluctuate.

Bonus: Save the Story

If you bought the piece from a living artist, there’s a good chance they shared its meaning, inspiration, or a little background. I've started sending my original artwork home with their printed stories included because it's such a special part of the artwork's meaning. Save that story, include it with the artwork when possible, and share it when others ask about the piece. It adds soul and connection and honors the creative process behind it.

Caring for art is a lot like caring for a plant or a beloved heirloom. A little attention goes a long way. By protecting your artwork, you’re preserving not only its beauty but the energy and intention behind it.
