“Baltimore Checkerspot” in "Making Matters" Invitational Group Show at Peters Valley School of Craft

I'm thrilled to share that my painted paper sculpture, "Baltimore Checkerspot," is on display for the Making Matters: Fresh Perspectives in Fine Craft exhibition at Peters Valley School of Craft in Layton, NJ. This invitational group show highlights the work of instructors and artists connected to the school, and I’m honored to be part of it.

The exhibition runs June 14 through August 3, 2025, and features a wide range of materials and techniques taught in Peters Valley workshops. If you're nearby or planning a visit, you’ll be able to see the incredible variety of craft happening there, and maybe even sign up for a class yourself!

About the work

The Baltimore Checkerspot is a hand-painted, cruelty-free paper sculpture that mimics the look of real insect specimens—without harming a single creature. It was made using recycled paper and acrylic paint, then assembled with attention to detail and reverence for the species that inspired it.

In traditional entomology collections, specimens are often created by killing and pinning real insects. My sculptural works offer an alternative—honoring the beauty and personhood of wild beings while treading lightly on the earth. Each piece is meant to celebrate nature, not collect it.
