How Winter Is Shaping My Art Practice

Yesterday, I went out for a hike around the lake, and it was exactly what I needed.

The snow covered surface sparkled in the muted winter light. Though I never saw him, a Belted Kingfisher rattled from across the frozen lake. I did catch sight of two Downy Woodpeckers pecking at tree bark, and squirrels darted back and forth across the path as busy as ever.

We often talk about nature coming to a halt during the cold months, but I realized that just isn’t true.

Nature slows, yes, but there is still so much life. It simply turns its attention to what matters most.

You should have seen me a month ago. I won’t go into too much gruesome detail, but let’s just say a nasty cold had me out of commission for far too long.

I want to be honest with you… I often talk about slowing down, being present in nature, and living a quieter life and yet, I struggle with it. I’m actually talking to myself when I give that advice. I really burned myself out at the end of last season, and I truly believe my immune system just couldn’t keep up.

After a lot of resting, reflecting, and even some decluttering, I finally feel ready to face the new year.

Moving Foward

As I move into this new year and new slower schedule, here’s what you can expect from me…

Four seasonal painting collections throughout the year, each one rooted in a different season.

Local York folks, you’ll see my art class schedule out early, including a brand new class all about creating your own paper butterfly sculpture.

More writing, more painting, and more resting.

It’s time to take a page from nature and focus on these few meaningful things and do much less of the things that drain me.

One more thing. I’ll no longer be hosting monthly art print giveaways, but before you riot… I have something even better planned. Last fall, I celebrated my collection release with a giveaway basket filled with handmade cozy gifts, artwork, and even a couple of gift cards.

I loved doing it so much that I’m turning it into a seasonal tradition. At each collection release this year, I’ll be giving away a big seasonal gift basket.

Thank you for being here with me!
